Zimbardo is known for his controversial Stanford Prison Experiment that investigates the interaction between one’s environment and personality. The experiment indicated that we might be subject more to the environment than we think - the participants in the study started out as normal college students and ended up being either sadistic guards or submissive prisoners; it’s still uncertain exactly what it shows.

Whilst researching the study I found an interview between ‘Dr Dave’ of shrink wrap radio and Zimbardo. This is mainly a frenzy whipper-upper for Zimbardo’s new book though still entertaining. It also adds character to one of those wonderfully zany academic psychologists out there.

Yesterday’s ‘Today’ program on BBC 4 interviewed the social psychologist Carol Tavris about her new book ‘Mistakes were made (but not by me)‘. In this interview Tavris covers cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias and a few other interesting points.

Whilst checking out some psychology podcasts I came accross two interesting interviews: on with Altemyer who is famous for the RWA (Right Wing Authoritarian) scales, and one with Baddeley who is famous for his work with Hitch in producing the ‘Working Memory’ model.

Both of the topics are on the first year syllabus and in each interview they talk about how they came to investigating their particular fields. So as well as doing some revision, the interviews flesh out the personalities. I, for one, can’t see the downside - procastination with a cast iron alibi :)
